Test #1830 Records : Kallis and Prince Architect Another Series Win For South Africa.

For the second time this year Sahara Park witnessed both Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince Combination guiding South Africa to a victory after their team was placed in a very precarious position. They added 77 runs against India and took South Africa’s score to 209 for 5 while chasing 211 runs for a win on 6th January in the third and final test against India and ensured a series win for their side. They partnered again on 28th January in the third and deciding test against Pakistan when South Africa were reeling at 39 for 4 while chasing a modest target of 161 and added 117 runs to win the test and with that a successive series victory for South Africa. With a tremendous patience and willingness to stay at the wicket at any cost they nullified the effect of reputed spinners like Anil Kumble and Danish Kaneria on a turning track on both occasions.

South Africa thus keeps its record of not losing a test series to Pakistan at Home since they first played against each other in 1994-95.

Following are some of the statistical of this test match:

It is very rare that neither team in a test match could reach a total of at least 200 runs in either of the innings. The highest total in this recently concluded test match was Pakistan’s second innings score of 186. This represents only 33rd such occasion in a test match that produced a result. Nineteen of those instances resulted in a victory for the team batting first. Three of those test matches ended in innings defeats, once for the team batting first and twice for the team batting second.

Just for the record : Except on three occasions all 10 wickets have fallen in those completed innings. Charles Bannerman was retired hurt when he hit 165 out of his team’s first innings total of 245 in the first ever test match. His 67.35% of runs still stands as the record for highest percentage of runs scored by an individual in any test match innings. VVS Laxman’s 63.98% occupies third position in the list. When Laxman made 167 out of India’s total of 261 Vijay Bharadwaj did not bat as he was absent hurt. As many as five players were absent hurt when Mohinder Amarnath made 60 out of India’s 97 at Sabina Park, Kingston in 1975/76 when Michael Holding was at his furious best.

Paul Harris of South Africa came in as night watchman in both innings of this test match providing seventh such occasion. Following is the list of all such instances in which same player was used as night watchman in both innings of a test match.

Another interesting statistic that Paul Harris became a part of in this test match is that he was dismissed twice on the same day, which is not as that much of a rare occurrence in test cricket. It happened as many as 468 times, but Harris’ distinction lies in the fact that he was dismissed twice on the same day of a test match in two consecutive tests having managed it in the previous test too at Port Elizabeth.
